The map is built to be extended. The same hooks the Pro add-on uses are public, which means a map can be wired up to data you already have — and kept in step with it automatically, without anyone maintaining the map by hand.
We wrote this plugin for School Choice Funding, one of our own sites. It publishes a directory of school-choice programs, and every program is an ordinary WordPress post tagged to a state. From that alone, the map counts the programs in each state, shades the state by how many there are, and shows the totals in the tooltip when you hover it.
